The Bloomington Quilters Guild, celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, was founded by a small group of dedicated quilters whose goal was "to develop an appreciation for the history of quilting and quilters, and to promote a continuation of the art in our community." Now 175 members-strong, with an average attendance of nearly 100 at our monthly meetings, we enjoy presentations by nationally and regionally recognized teachers as well as our own talented members. More than 1,000 people viewed our triennial BQG Quilt Show last November.
BQG hosts two weekend retreats each year. Members stitch, laugh, eat, and enjoy the beauty of southern Indiana state parks for three days in the winter and in the fall. In addition, we enjoy a "mystery quilt" workshop each summer.
Our members share their talents through several community service efforts. Each year, members make and donate approximately 150 Kids Quilts to local agencies to be distributed to children in need or in crisis situations. This year more than 60 quilters joined to make and donate two quilts to new owners of Habitat for Humanity homes. Our members also made and donated nearly 100 hats to our local hospital to be distributed to cancer patients. And, as another community service, our local libraries offer hundreds of quilt-related books that have been purchased with annual BQG donations.
