Shannon Shirley

As far back as I can remember, I loved to create things in just about any medium. My mother has always done a variety of needlework and my father always built things so I have been exposed to their handiwork through out my life. In 1985, when I was pregnant with my first child my mum and I decided to make a small quilt for the bassinet and that is where it all started for me. In 1989 my parents bought me a Bernina which I still use today. My interest in quilting grew, but with 3 small children time was limited and I pretty much taught myself with some help from my mum. I kept my projects small and simple but it was a great way to practice by skills and learn new techniques over time.

In 1998 I joined The Cabin Branch Quilters (an NQA chapter)in Woodbridge, Virginia. I was a very quiet member for a number of years but over time have formed wonderful friendships within this group of about 150. I started out focusing on traditional quilting methods and in 2004 I participated in a number of guild challenges and started taking technique classes through the guild and at MAQF and everything changed for me. I now create original quilts using a variety of tips, techniques and styles that I have learned over the years. I don't think there will ever be enough time to make all of the quilts that are in my head.

I enjoy working on a variety of projects but they often incorporate vintage needlework or children's artwork. My mum has a collection of vintage quilts and a variety of vintage needlework pieces. I love and admire their charm and beauty, even their imperfections. I began using orphan quilt blocks in my work but now I use any vintage linens I can find, even ones I consider ugly because they are often the most challenging and rewarding. From the beginning I have also incorporated children's artwork in my quilting. I love the whimsical, quirky nature of young children's art in particular. I still find myself today inspired by pieces my girls created when they were small and they are all adults now.

I love to teach and share the knowledge I have gained over the years and I am always looking for opportunities to learn. In 2006, I began teaching in local shops and then began sharing to larger groups when I started giving lectures and workshops. I love the enthusiastic response of the quilters I meet, it fuels my creative spirit.

Within my guild I have become much more involved over the years. I participate in retreats and a weekly bee. I am in charge of quilt take in and distribution for our annual quilt show, as well as doing demonstrations daily during the show. I have also been in charge of Block of the Month for a number of years. I truly believe that it is because of my involvement in these areas that I formed the friendships I have over the years and I encourage everyone to get involved even in little ways. The quilting community is like family to me, they are very supportive and have been there for me during good times and bad.

I encourage everyone to share your quilts. Quilters of all levels have great things to share and the enthusiasm of the viewers is awesome. Participate in show and tell, put your quilts in local shows or county fairs and yes, even enter national and international shows. I have exhibited my quilts across the country and am always thrilled when I can travel to the shows and meet quilters from all over the world.
